Blogging 101 - No Follow Links

What are no follow links? When should you use them? What do they do? In the next part of my Blogging 101 series, we're looking at No Follow links and why you need to know!

Blogging 101 - No Follow Links

No matter where you look, you've probably found someone asking about No Follow links. So I've made it as simple as possible so it's easy to understand!

First up we'll start with some definitions;

No Follow
A link that doesn't get 'linked' or increase another website/blogs DA or PA

A link that does 'link' or increase another website/blogs DA or PA

Link Juice
The power a link can give to another website/blogs DA or PA or search engine ranking

Page Authority

Domain Authority

So, No Follow links basically mean your Domain and/or Page Authority doesn't link to the websites/blogs page and increase their Domain and/or Page Authority.

Google isn't a massive fan of follow links, as it affects search results. For example you search for Domain Names you get two types of results.

Not only do you get the results we searched for but we also got a whole load of adverts. The most popular sites appear at the top of the actually search results while the other links and results are paid for by the company to appear at the top of the page.

Follow links affect the results by pushing websites higher on the search result than they actually would be, for free.

For example, say your blog has a DA of 25 and you link to a website with a DA of 10, your 'link juice' will then push the website up the search result list because it is linked with a higher ranking page, therefore Google's results aren't true.

You can check your blogs DA/PA and much more here - Website Authority Checker

You should always set paid or compensated posts to No Follow links. Google can and does crack down on people who incorrectly use follow and no follow links but pushing their DA and PA down until the links are updated or corrected.

  1. Thank you so much for this!
I had an email about it and I'm like 'whaat?' Sometimes the techy side of blogging makes me feel so stupid *hides face*

  2. This was so helpful, thank you so much x

  3. Thanks for this, I kind of had an idea how it all worked but wasn't quite 100% so this helps. I liked that you also explained Link Juice too!
