The truth about 'festival fashion'

I've seen literally hundreds of blog posts all telling you how to dress, how to do your hair & how to keep your style at a festival. As a festival goer I'm here to tell you the truth. The dirty, sweaty, sunburnt truth!

You see these images of people looking amazing at festivals. Let me tell you, these people aren't going festivals properly.
First of all before anything, you arrive at your festival. Full of excitement for the weekend ahead. Now say it's taken you 4 hours to get to your destination, that's four hours your clothes have been screwed up in a bag. Your not going to be getting those creases out in a hurry.
Secondly, no one tells you this. Your campsite is usually bloody miles away from the entrance. You'll be hurting from lugging a weekends worth of cereal bars and water, hot from being in the middle of a field with no shade and that's if it hasn't been pouring down so your essentially living in a swamp for 3 days!

When you finally make it to a bit of a field that you've decided you'll call home, there's then the task of putting up your tent without taking someone's eye out. Now if you still have eyes left (and if your makeup has melted down your face so you look like a member of Kiss), you can finally set up your bed and start to get a bit more settled. Lovely.

Cue the next morning, after a night in a sweaty plastic box. Your hair will look like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards and regardless if you brought the most recommended portable straighteners on the market, they just won't be as good as your pair at home. It's virtually impossible to get your hair looking like any Youtube tutorial you've seen in a compact mirror, fact. If you do decide to risk the showers, be prepared. Drunk people treat anywhere as toilets.... just saying.

Now it's time to get dressed. You'll probably find your clothes have turned into a hot mess after being shoved in a bag for 24 hours and the temperature change overnight will have set those creases like concrete.
Makeup is a whole 'nother story! Unless you want to worry about touching up your lipstick all day, your just going to have to accept that come rain or shine your makeup is going to slide off your face! You'll either be sweating in a packed crowd or wading through a swamp of the field in the rain.

At the end of the day, unless you stay in a hotel, no amount of Youtube tutorials or dry shampoo is going to save you. And at the end of the day, why would you want it too?
Your there to experience festival life, see some amazing bands and make some amazing memories. Why spend your time worrying about what you like? Why not just get stuck in that mosh pit & enjoy life?
Basically, don't pack your best clothes, don't pack your best shoes and learn to accept by bedtime your eyeliner is probably going to have smudged and your hair will be a hot mess.
Just enjoy it!

Until next time,

  1. Haha you just need some good boots, and somewhere to keep your belongings, and I think that makes a good festival outfit!

  2. haha this is so true! You always go in thinking everything will be settled but forget all of those details. It's way too hot and the parking lot is soooooo far away from the actual event lol I always see people with the worst sunburn ever within a few hours.

  3. I've never been to a festival and this posts confirms why, effort, haha! I don't think anyone believes those flawless photos of people at festivals anymore. Great post!

  4. Great post, the first festival I went to I wanted to be all stylish but when I got there all effort went out the window. I just shoved my hair up and don't even think I took make-up! xo

  5. This should be in the magazines because it's 100% truth, not that bollocks they write about "we wear fringed dresses and high heels, and your makeup still stay in place if you use ___" haha!
